British Designer Antony Price, Celebrated for Creating Looks for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer who crafted some of the most iconic looks worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, including the light-hued ensembles that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."
Price's death comes shortly after he debuted his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he started his work in menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on model Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to merge tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in shaping body-hugging looks established him as a "true original," according to the UK's fashion authority.
By the 1990s, he began working on pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including various looks for her tour of the United States following her marriage.
With a vocation that covered over fifty years, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.
