Guitar Hero at 20 – The Plastic Guitar That Connected the Gap Between Music Generations

It has been 20 years after the legendary game hit the market in North America, giving players everywhere the opportunity to feel like a rock star. Not literally, but try telling that someone who's mastered Free Bird’s lengthy guitar solo in front of a packed living-room audience.

Developed by Harmonix, the game provided users with a guitar-shaped controller to follow coloured notes scrolling down the display in time with the music. Each riff mimicked specific notes, producing the feel of a genuine performance.

The studio previously tried its hand with rhythm games prior to teaming up with the publisher, which was purchased by the gaming giant during the mid-2000s. Collaboratively, they laid the groundwork for an unlikely massively profitable series that had a significant influence for many of the artists included, showcasing decades-old bands to millions of younger players.

A former executive, former COO of Harmonix, recalls the early budgetary hurdles in securing the recordings – despite the fact the first two games primarily featured cover versions.

“We rerecorded every song since the dollar figure prohibitive,” he says. “Despite having the necessary permissions by themselves, it proved nearly impossible. We failed to secure acts such as legendary groups – the publisher was operating on a shoestring budget, and we were fairly certain the project would flop. But once Guitar Hero became a hit, and record sales airtime were going up, everyone wanted to participate.”

He adds: “Among the remarkable aspects was how many mothers and fathers reached out expressing gratitude for introducing their kids to the songs they loved. It evolved into a multigenerational thing.”

Timeless Music Finds Younger Fans

Northern Irish group one featured act included their track on the 2008 game the popular installment. Guitarist the artist remembers how the series revived older hits back into vogue: “The game provided a larger, younger audience. Typically such music was seen as music that was past it, but then when it was featured on the title and teenagers discovered it, abruptly it became trendy. That legitimised it, eliminating the outdated tag. It gave all our music a new life.”

At that time, the Answer’s first record was still not available in the US, so Guitar Hero served as a primary platform for exposure for the group as they went on US tour supporting AC/DC. “The roadies had on the song during travel, and some of them knew us from Guitar Hero,” Mahon says.

Rock’s Heavyweight Titles Enduring Impact

Rock’s heavyweight names quickly took advantage of the series’ popularity, with Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen featuring in specialized game editions that focused on their music collections and associated stories, visuals and rock’n’roll mythology. For example, the Aerosmith edition, it was said to have made the band more money compared to their records. It sold well over 500,000 units in its first week, while sales of Aerosmith’s music rose significantly during an era when the music business faced decline.

Guitar Hero continues to inspire quick-handed dedication among its fans. Recently, a streamer completed a remarkable feat of DragonForce’s the challenging track – an infamously tough anthem popularized through Guitar Hero – using a fan-made version, a freeware game with almost identical mechanics but an array of customisation options. The song is challenging enough on the hardest setting, not to mention played at increased tempo while hitting every one of its near 4,000 notes. They stated it took nine months to accomplish.

“Guitar Hero is a fun, fantasy thing. Just as with other games, it doesn't imply you should use actual weapons and go to war,” says DragonForce guitarist Herman Li.

DragonForce had already wrapped up a profitable run before their hit was featured in the third game, yet he explains it turned them into a household name. “I recall the record label informing us that we were selling albums rapidly,” he shares. “It exploded on the subsequent tour, and we were playing right ahead of top acts on the Mayhem festival.”

Indeed, the band's visibility via the game was so immense that it threatened to overshadow everything else the band has done. Last year, the track was used in a trailer for Despicable Me 4. “Previously I felt differently, but I’ve made peace with it,” he admits. “If you only hear one DragonForce song, that's fine – everyone’s got their own path in music and I'm pleased we played a role of people’s lives”.

Enduring Legacy from the Iconic Controller

Top-tier marketing, be it for automobiles, apparel or games, goes further mere transactions – it inspires a desire. Did Guitar Hero tap into that? “Precisely what our team aiming to achieve,” Dornbrook says. “The excitement of being a music icon in the spotlight. Since the beginning, the creators felt that there’s an instinctive human desire to create songs, and they wanted to use technology to allow people to do it”.

Most installments came out over a mere half-decade from 2005 to 2010, including spin-offs like DJ Hero, complete with a turntable controller, and the band-focused game. After that, the publisher’s interest in plastic instruments waned, except for a short-lived revival in 2015.

Games like Clone Hero and newer releases have kept the community alive, and there’s expectations of something from the founders on the way. A new studio has begun production on their first rhythm-based title. The initial creators are participating as special advisers. Is the world prepared to welcome another game following the classic?

“Our team believed those games might become similar to sports games where you can update every year,” Dornbrook says. “With abundant fresh tracks it could remain perennially popular, so I’ve always been optimistic. There’s no reason why it can’t continue with new generations.”
