Citizens have assembled across the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-initiated attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations proceeded in the neighboring country over a resolution to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.

The incident resulted in more than 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most most fatal day for Jews since the World War II.

Israel reacted by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has killed in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its figures are regarded as reliable by the UN and other international bodies.

"Our violent enemies have caused great damage, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister remarked on that day.

He also pledged to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the release of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will never again present a risk to Israel".

Memorial Gatherings Across Israel

The government authorities rescheduled formal memorials until 16 October - after the completion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still took place across the country on Tuesday.

A commemorative event for the relatives of Israelis who died in the Hamas incident was conducted in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the families themselves, it was televised throughout Israeli television channels.

A period earlier, a minute's silence was held around the country.

Negotiation Talks in Egypt

Simultaneously, Israeli and Hamas delegations gathered in the North African coastal city of the Egyptian city for a second day of indirect talks to review the provisions of the plan.

A senior representative involved in the discussions revealed that an late session of negotiations began at 7 PM local time.

The source explained the morning session finished without concrete outcomes, amid differences over the suggested Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas seeks to guarantee Israel does not resume hostilities after the first phase of the deal.

He noted that the negotiations are "difficult and have not yet deliver any real breakthrough," but noted that intermediaries are making efforts to narrow the differences between the both parties.

Key Issues in Discussions

  • A lasting ceasefire
  • The exchange of the hostages still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
  • Plans for humanitarian aid deliveries
  • Future management of the area

Civilian Feeling

In the city's public square that day, young Hagar - whose family member survived the attack on the gathering, where 378 people were lost their lives and dozens more were abducted by Hamas fighters - told: "Nowhere seems like home anymore and until each abducted person return none of us will have peace of mind."

"Once we see all home again, we can feel relief once more. Then we can begin to rebuild," she continued.

In front of the prime minister's home in the capital, people assembled to show their solidarity for the relatives of the hostages. Israel reports 48 continue in captivity in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are believed to be surviving.

Protester one woman stated: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement required for the abducted to be released. But we truly desire guarantees that we will be protected."

Research now frequently demonstrate that around 70% of the population desire the conflict to finish in exchange for the release of the captives.

Gaza Conditions

At the area of Nova festival, grieving people assembled to pay their respects.

From that location, the sound of Israeli air strikes and artillery could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the severe Israeli attacks carried on.

In Gaza City, attacks were reported in the dawn of Tuesday in the western Tal al-Hawa, area and locality districts and in the eastern area of that sector, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.

"Once the night comes, the dread comes with it," relocated urban resident a mother, whose teenage son was died by an Israeli aerial attack last year, explained.

"We are terrified of the bombings. Throughout the evening we are resting together, embracing, notably my little child who rests his head on me the entire evening."

"Every second we look at the reports to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be achieved and that the conflict will resume to us."

Health Crisis

Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City announced it had taken in the bodies of half dozen people by the midday, including several killed in an Israeli bombing in the south part area.

Another medical facility in the south region of that area indicated additional dead people had been transported. One of them was died by Israeli troops while attempting to get assistance to the southern area, medical staff reported.
