NY Unveils Reporting Tool for Public to Report ICE Images Following Arrests of 4 American Citizens
New York state attorney general has rolled out a recent online portal encouraging citizens to submit images and footage of federal immigration enforcement across New York. This step comes just a shortly after a significant ICE raid rattled Manhattan's Chinatown, sparking large-scale protests.
American Citizens Held In Enforcement Action
A lawmaker disclosed during a midweek briefing that four American citizens were detained and kept for "nearly 24 hours" after the previous day's operation. Protests occurred in New York on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
"Each citizen is entitled to reside free from terror," state officials declared in a announcement.
"For those who saw and documented immigration enforcement yesterday, I encourage you to provide that footage with my office. We are pledged to assessing these reports and investigating any wrongdoings."
Portal Features
The platform offers fields to send visual evidence of the raid, along with a field to specify location information. When submitting, individuals must mark a checkbox that confirms that "the office may use any evidence provided in a official report, including in a legal proceeding or official statement."
Information about the ICE Action
The Manhattan operation, which witnesses say included more than 50 government officers, occurred in a popular area of Manhattan where counterfeit purses, items, goods and merchandise are sold daily widely – often to visitors.
Recordings of the operation depict several hooded and equipped personnel restraining and arresting a individual, and shoving away witnesses. Masses of locals pursued the personnel along the roads. An armored military vehicle was observed rolling through the city streets.
Official Reactions
In a Wednesday press conference organized with the New York immigrant rights coalition, congressman Dan Goldman, a lawmaker, said that four nationals were taken by federal agents for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no circumstances where nationals should be detained for unjustly." He noted the persons were released on Wednesday with no legal action taken.
"The intent is obvious here. It is not focused on deporting lawbreakers," the congressman remarked. "This constitutes a armed campaign to incite tension. It is merely a justification to incite violence for the government to bring in the armed forces to halt unrest that they have created."
Widespread Condemnation
Fury over the federal action escalated – all three mayoral candidates condemned the raid, along with the state leader.
"Yet again, the Trump administration opts for heavy-handed tactics that instill panic, not safety. It must stop," a contender wrote.
New York City community groups spoke out too.
"Immigration agents descended on Manhattan's Chinatown with military-style vehicles, covered personnel and protective equipment to target local sellers attempting to earn income. This raid had no relation to public safety and everything to do with intimidating residents and neighborhoods," said the leader of a rights organization.
ICE Policies
Official guidelines prohibits the detention of US citizens and the bureau has claimed it will not take into custody US citizens. Yet, independent reporting has discovered that numerous citizens have been detained unlawfully by ICE during the period of the present government.
Recent Pattern
Enforcement actions have been rising in frequency in the state and around the country lately.
A recent action in the city center was the initial documented operation on an refuge facility of the current administration. Protests against ICE are ubiquitous along with accusations of force and inhumane treatment.
Most recently, a letter provided by civil rights groups stated inadequate care of women with child in ICE facilities.
