Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research suggests that patients who stop using new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a major health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing these medications must be informed of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to starting weight within about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually see a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Experts suggest the way of the injections explains the accelerated regain.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have come off the medication report a powerful return of cravings.

"It was like a switch activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers stress that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
