Senegal's Emerging Talent Camara: From Aspirations to Tournament Favorites.
As I enter the room, the young midfielder picks up a soccer ball he won’t let go of throughout our chat. It’s a simple visual metaphor for a ambition he has never let slip. “My sole focus was the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” states this AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.
His determination and natural ability won over clubs like Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. However, the hardest person to convince was not a club executive or coach, but his own father. “He was against me to play football but it’s because he had never watched me,” says Camara.
Surmounting Early Hurdles
Eventually, on “a special day,” he received his father’s blessing to pursue his path in the game. Another challenge was his modest frame, which deterred local club Casa Sports from giving him a deal.
However, Génération Foot – the club that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After he earned the best player in a regional tournament, the scouts were “shocked” to learn he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “I was taken directly to the training centre. They prevented me from returning home,” Camara said.
A Landmark Season and European Arrival
This move put him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “a year to remember,” which began with Camara winning the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, though tired, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his nation to victory and being named best player.
Soon after, he was unveiled as Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a challenge,” states the youngster. He has lived alone in Europe, a situation his family support to maintain his concentration.
Inspiration and Playing Style
Off-field noise aren't a concern for Camara, who looks up to Kevin De Bruyne’s “humility” and exceptional skills. He is also a big admirer of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His powerful shot and accuracy from set pieces are notable assets. Camara confesses a need to temper his competitive fire, after being sent off at the start of his spells at each French club. “It is a habit that is following me!” he jokes.
Life at Monaco, Mentors and Upcoming Goals
With his current club, he values learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” he said.
Currently, his focus is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – there's no denying it. After defeating England in their own country…,” he says, pointing to a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.
Regarding a transfer to the English top flight, he is focused on Monaco at present. “I feel really at ease here,” he insists. He is often teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about targeting the main top prize in the future.
“We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England at Wembley… it instills belief.”
Moving forward, Lamine Camara combines humble beginnings, steely determination, and grand ambitions targeting to guide Senegal to continental glory and forge his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
