Slot Maintains He Is Safe and Retains Liverpool's Backing Following PSV Eindhoven Defeat
Arne Slot acknowledged that it was natural for doubts to be raised about his future following a further convincing defeat versus PSV Eindhoven.
Liverpool endured their ninth defeat in 12 matches, marking the team's poorest run since being relegated in the 1953-54 season.
They were dominated by the Eredivisie title holders on a punishing evening at their home ground.
“I'm confident, I am OK, I have got plenty of support from management,” the coach stated.
“It would be nice to turn it around and get a victory obviously but if you are coaching a team and struggling then it is normal that questions are asked.”
He continued, “I accept my position. This isn't the first time I've found myself in a difficult position but it's crucial that we improved our results.”
Discussions with Club Management
Upon being questioned to elaborate on his discussions with the team officials, the head coach revealed:
“We communicate frequently. They are helpful to the team and to me and we discuss these matters but they don't phone me constantly each day to say they trust me.”
He added, “In the normal exchanges I sense the confidence. But I haven’t spoken to them since this game so far so it remains to be seen.”
Recurring Failings and Squad Reaction
The manager highlighted familiar weaknesses from his team in their Champions League defeat, namely poor finishing and leaking goals.
Meanwhile, midfielder Curtis Jones was more forthright in his assessment of the club’s predicament.
“I don’t have the solutions. Truthfully, I don’t. I’m saying that to everyone,” the midfielder remarked.
“It is not good enough. I don’t even need to wait to think about it. I'm beyond getting mad inside. I've reached the stage currently where I simply lack the words.”
He added, “It’s hard because I’m playing for the team I support. I'm a supporter, and I've watched Liverpool since I was young.”
“In a long, long time, I've not seen a Liverpool team experiencing a spell such as this with performances this poor.”
Jones stated, “But we continue to wear the crest on our chest. And as long as that badge is taken away, we’re always going to battle.”
“We will attempt to bring this squad back to its rightful place, prove again the values of this club and the reason it's called the greatest side in the planet.”
“At this moment, we're in trouble and it must improve.”
