New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion, departing from the rent-stabilised apartment that was a central issue during his campaign.

An Iconic Home

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the mayoral home for the majority of New York City mayors since the World War II era.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a central issue, was not quick to announce this decision immediately after his victory in November.

"My choice came down to keeping my family safe and the importance of focusing all of my focus on enacting the affordability agenda the city's residents supported," stated Mamdani in his announcement.

A Fond Farewell

Mamdani lived in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community famous for its vibrant immigrant populations and global cuisine.

"To the people of Astoria: many thanks for demonstrating the true spirit of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"Even though I'm moving in the neighborhood, it will continue to reside a part of me and my work," he affirmed.

A Contentious Issue

Throughout his election campaign, Mamdani connected his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.

However his opponents, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the affordable housing even though he came from a well-known family.

A House Not Always Used

Not every mayor have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side for his time in office, which ended in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg said he believed it should be a space for public city functions, and championed a major refurbishment of the aging mansion.

A Stately Residence

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by an environment a stark contrast to his humble Astoria home.

Adorned in cream-colored walls, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house overlooking the East River.

Internally, the lower floor of the historically styled mansion is decorated to reflect the home's historical period.

The compound, which allegedly has several bedrooms, also has increased security measures to protect the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

A number of people have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and closing inexplicably, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "No matter what people claim," he declared in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

Affordable Housing Lifeline

His former home is under rent control, a policy where the city regulates on how much property owners can increase rent each year.

New Yorkers view rent-stabilized housing as valuable lifelines as the cost of housing outpaces what many can afford.

Data indicated Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
