The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Song
This latest animated series, the newest animated series by the beloved role-playing group, unveiled a new opening credits. It showcases the beloved cast of misfits, misfits, and rogues fighting hard and taking names, while teasing at multiple agonizing personal histories for characters including the voice actor's mage Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, Fjord.
All in all, the opening appears amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was lost in the song choice.
The intro uses "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar song composed by artist Colm McGuinness. It's a track originating from the soundtrack album of that title, the second release released by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label their music brand. It's a great sentimental option, and I believe that fans of the second campaign will love its presence.
Personally, The series' intro doesn't quite capture the excitement and energy that accompanied the show's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it only got better when cast member Sam Riegel added lyrics to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Featuring vocals from one actress, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the track was memorable and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't seen the second campaign yet, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my device. It's a song that excites you before you dive into an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The show's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the same chords in my opinion. It's an impressive composition, but from what I know of the group, I feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, Critical Role has stated that the series will have a few changes and variations from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its intro appears as one of them.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager before that, or want a head start to learn about the personas of the second series, the original episodes are available on the audio platform and YouTube.
